If, for example, they were testing the effectiveness of aspirin to prevent heart attacks, a small sample of patients may not tell the whole story. Too many factors come into play in such a study, for a small sample to be effective. If a subject in the study also takes something else for headaches, there may be counter effects and therefore the study may not be effective. In essence, a large sample of subjects is often vital to the final statistical outcome of the medical research.

The statistical outcome of medical research is dependent on many factors. Statistics depend on how many factors are entered into the study. If for example, a researcher is testing to see if smoking is bad for your health, they must also take into account other things the subject is around that may be bad for their health. For example, smokers tend to drink coffee which may cause a counter effect to the smoking. The smoker may be a runner, which again could provide counter effects to the smoking. When performing medical research, an individual must be able to account for other factors in their research. This is a perfect example of why a large subject pool is necessary.

A blind study can be an effective way to rule out some problems one encounters in medical research. If the researcher is unaware of which subjects are exposed to a certain medication vs. a placebo, they will more effectively get results. Blind studies help rule out a researchers preconceived notions coming into play when they perform their statistical analyze and other outcomes.

Although medical research is vital to good medical care, it is just as vital to see more than one study on a subject. Frequently, medical research revels that recent research was wrong and we see it happen again and again. Medical research can produce different results with the same factors because their is always room for error. The most effective medical research is research that decreases the possibility of error. While there is always going to be room for error in medical research, a good researcher finds a way to eliminate or account for those errors.

Medical research must take many things into consideration. For a medical professional to utilize medical research effectively, they must view all research with open eyes. It is best to compare new studies with old studies and check the validity of each study available on a subject.
